    First Visits are Fun!

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by Age 1. As Pediatric Specialists we are well acquainted with the limited attention spans of these little ones! This first, thorough, quick, examination allows for early detection and prevention of dental problems and provides valuable information to support good home care habits.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers are amazing patients with personalities ranging from cautious and shy to gregarious and curious. Regardless of your young child’s personality, our goal is to make your child’s first visit informative and fun. Our highly trained staff are sensitive to the joys and fears of all children. Building trust and setting a positive tone for each appointment is highest priority.

Parents often wonder what to say to their small child prior to their first dental visit. In brief, keep the mention of your child’s appointment to meet Dr. Baker calm and casual. Oftentimes, the less said, the better! Many parents with small children find it helpful to mention that “Dr. Baker is a very special doctor who only plays with children all day. He loves to count teeth so that his friends have healthy mouths for chewing food that helps them grow. In fact, Dr. Baker has counted Elmo's (or other favorite characters teeth) teeth. Maybe Dr. Baker can even tell us how many teeth Elmo has.” Our front office staff is always happy to answer your concerns and questions and provide helpful suggestions for encouraging a fun first visit.

Oftentimes parents ask if they are permitted to join their children in the treatment area. In consultation, at the beginning of your appointment, we desire to understand your preferences. Our goal is to work effectively as a team: staff, patients and parents. Should you desire to accompany your child into the treatment area, expectations and roles are discussed with you such that your child’s attention is not divided between you and the doctor/assistant or dental hygienist. By keeping the child’s attention properly focused we can gain great cooperation.

We look forward to meeting you at your first visit and “cool adventure in dental health”!
